Extreme UV Levels Highlight Knowledge Gap
Cancer Council and ARPANSA are urging Australians to improve their understanding of the UV Index as summer UV levels reach extreme highs. New research shows only one in six Australians know how to interpret the UV Index, despite widespread concern about skin cancer risk.
With January UV levels often exceeding 11 across much of the country, experts stress the importance of daily sun protection when the UV reaches 3 or above.
Read more to learn why checking the UV Index could protect your health and how to stay sun safe this summer.
New nuclear medicine manufacturing facility at ANSTO
ANSTO Secures Key Approval for New Nuclear Medicine Facility
ANSTO has achieved a significant milestone with the approval of its siting licence for the new Nuclear Medicine Manufacturing Facility (NMMF) at Lucas Heights. Granted by ARPANSA, this approval confirms the chosen location meets strict regulatory standards and marks an important step forward for Australia’s sovereign healthcare capability.
The purpose-built facility will replace ANSTO’s current processing centre, which has served the nation for more than 60 years. Once operational, the NMMF will support the ongoing production of vital nuclear medicines used in up to 12,000 medical procedures each week across Australian hospitals and clinics.
With construction expected to begin in 2027 and operations commencing in the mid-2030s, this project represents a major investment in innovation, safety, and long-term healthcare security.

Should Nuclear Be Part of Australia’s Energy Future?
A new opinion piece argues that while renewables may appear cheapest in the short term, a longer-term view shows nuclear energy could play a critical role in Australia’s energy mix beyond 2050. The article highlights concerns around reliability, infrastructure delays, and the risks of relying solely on renewables.
With heavy industry dependent on stable power and other nations expanding nuclear capacity, the author suggests a mixed system could offer greater security and cost stability.
Read more to explore why nuclear is being positioned as a strategic “hedge” for Australia’s energy transition.
EME, 5G and Your Safety
As 5G continues to roll out across Australia, questions about electromagnetic energy (EME) and health remain common. National regulators confirm that emissions from mobile networks operate well below strict safety limits set by ARPANSA and are not harmful to the public.
Decades of global research show no evidence linking 5G or wireless technology to adverse health effects, and experts continue to actively monitor exposure levels nationwide.
